We know reading a privacy policy is exactly the kind of thing Clarity exists to make easier - so here's the plain-English summary first. The full detail is below if you want it.
Clarity is an app that helps you understand legal documents - leases, contracts, NDAs, and similar paperwork - by scanning or importing them and generating a plain-English summary at the level of detail you choose.
This policy explains what happens to your documents, and any other information, when you use Clarity.
When you scan or import a document, Clarity reads the text using your device's camera and Apple's built-in text recognition - on your device.
Your summary is then written by Apple's on-device AI (part of Apple Intelligence), which runs the language model locally, using your device's own hardware.
Your document's content is never transmitted to Clarity, to any server we operate, or to any third-party AI service. We don't run servers that process your documents - so there's nowhere for that content to go except your own device.
By default, your scanned documents, extracted text, and generated summaries are stored only on your device, in Clarity's private app storage.
If you choose to sign in with your Apple ID, your documents and settings can optionally sync across your own devices through Apple's iCloud - specifically, your own private iCloud database, which only your Apple ID can access. This is entirely your choice: Clarity works fully without ever signing in.
Whether or not you're signed in, Clarity itself never sees, accesses, or stores a copy of your documents. When iCloud sync is enabled, your data sits in your personal iCloud account, governed by Apple's own privacy practices - see Apple's Privacy Policy for how iCloud handles your data.
Neither permission gives Clarity a live or ongoing feed of your camera or photo library - only what you actively select to scan or import.
Signing in is optional and uses Sign in with Apple. Depending on the choices you make when signing in, we may receive a unique identifier and, if you choose to share them, your name and/or email address - Apple lets you hide your real email behind a private relay address instead, if you'd rather.
If you subscribe to Clarity Pro, your payment is handled entirely by the App Store - Clarity never sees or stores your card details. Apple shares limited purchase/subscription status information with us so the app can unlock Pro features on your account.
One honest caveat: if you've opted into sharing analytics with app developers under your iOS Settings, Apple may share anonymised crash/diagnostic data with us for that reason alone. That's controlled entirely by your own iOS Settings, not by anything Clarity does - and it never includes your document content.
Because we don't hold your data ourselves, most of the rights you'd expect to formally request from a company - access, correction, deletion, export - are already fully in your hands, on your own device, without needing to ask us for anything.
Clarity isn't directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 13 (or the relevant minimum age where you live). In practice, Clarity doesn't collect meaningful personal information from anyone at all - but if you believe a child has used the app in a way that concerns you, please contact us and we'll help.
We may update this policy occasionally - for example, if we add a new feature that changes how data is handled. We'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page whenever we do. Continuing to use Clarity after a change means you accept the updated policy.
